Bromiley-Brotman Jungle Rio trip 11APR05
Yari making presentation of "PMJBE Captain" to Jorge Smith, denoting him as one of our official captains to transport our clients in their cayucos. We use our ball-cap with Logo as the honorarium.
This simple acknowledgement goes a long ways in developing relationships with the indigenous.
You really want me to set foot on that craft!??? Yari goes too, so you can see there is nothing to fear. Just keep your hands inside the cayuco!
Jennifer & Karin head disembark at pueblo Mananti Abajo for their native cayuco (canoe) venture into the shallow crocodile ponds of the Rio Guariviara .
Hang on and don't rock the boat! Crafted from a single tree, these are sturdy and efficient vehicles along the rios. That they require a sense of balance is quickly obvious. The craft's weight can be well over 1500 lbs!
Slowly the craft is maneuvered past various obstacles in the dark waters flowing from the ponds. Various birds, sloths, raccoons might be spotted along the way. Of course, the ever present Blue Morpho butterfly is a delight as it often flies close to our silent craft.
This is really the jungle! That there are numerous varieties of everything here makes it difficult to encompass even a small portion of the possible views of this unique locale.
Can you spot the bird here? Yari says there was a nice one. Or, maybe it was a sloth? These 3 shots might tell you something about it?
Lunch spot was under this tree along the Rio Guariviara with nests of the Oropendulas quite visible. The unique calls of this bird was sometimes pierced by the Toucans also present. The background sounds included various frogs, cicadas as well as other birds passing by or the swallows flitting above catching flies.
Close up of the Oropendula nests, showing their unique structure. Entry is above the globe, just as the nest narrows to the hanging structure. Their nesting period was nearly over, so our fortune was to see these birds in action.
The annual Turkey Vulture Migration affords incredible views of literally thousands of these red-headed birds, at times in vast circulating spirals. These two photos barely give a sense of this incredible yearly event.
This is a 45 sec video and sounds of the Oropendulas.
